In 2022, the Government of Alberta partnered with Alberta Blue Cross® and Alberta Health Services to introduce the Client Directed Home Care Invoicing program in both the Edmonton and Calgary zones, and plans are underway to roll out the program across the province, starting with the north zone in the spring of 2023. The program gives home care clients the opportunity to choose their own home care agency or provider based on their individual needs for support services and empowers Albertans with disabilities and chronic conditions to stay in their homes longer.

Within this program, Alberta Health Services continues to oversee the delivery of home care, including client assessment and care planning. Alberta Blue Cross’s® role is to facilitate program administration, including client enrolment, direct-billing capabilities with home care agencies, answering client and provider inquiries and providing reporting and program support to Alberta Health and Alberta Heath Services.
