Coverage for Seniors

All Albertans age 65 and older are eligible for the Coverage for Seniors program.

Coverage for Seniors is premium-free coverage paid for by the Government of Alberta for health-related services not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan.

Enrolment

When the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan records indicate an Albertan will be turning 65, a package is mailed to the address on their file providing information about the programs and services available for seniors. This package will include a letter asking seniors to submit proof-of-age documents if required.

Acceptable proof-of-age documents include

Canadian driver’s licence,
Alberta identification (ID) card,
birth certificate,
old-age pension entitlement form,
passport or immigration record, and
Canadian citizenship certificate.

If a package was not sent to an individual who recently turned 65, they can contact the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan office. If there is already a proof-of-age document on the individuals file, Coverage for Seniors is automatically added to their account.

Once completed, the proof-of-age document and declaration can be sent to an Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan authorized registry agent for processing.
