The Government of Alberta added new pumps and supplies to the Insulin Pump Therapy Program (IPTP) as of December 23, 2022. The new products added include Tandem Diabetes Care and Ypsomed Canada pumps and supplies. This is in addition to the existing pumps and supplies produced by Medtronic Canada and Insulet Corporation. With this change, the program will cover all 4 brands of pumps on the market in Canada.
The IPTP has been administered by Alberta Blue Cross® on behalf of Alberta Health since June 1, 2013. This program is available to Albertans with Type 1 diabetes mellitus who meet eligibility criteria for coverage of insulin pumps and insulin pump supplies. All patients—whether they are new to insulin pump therapy or were using a pump before the program’s launch—require an assessment, approval and training from an Alberta Health Services diabetes clinic prior to claiming for a pump and supplies.
